May in Review — Only the Same Shape Can Be Laid Over

By makemind · May 29, 2026

May's proposition was experience compounds rather than being preserved. For that to hold there is one condition — the records have to be layerable.

What went out

Six fields

The sensor piece produced the actual size of that "same shape." id · role · kind · model · unit · value — six.

unit existing as a field is the core of it. A thermometer that measures in Fahrenheit says Fahrenheit; it does not helpfully pre-convert. Hardware says honestly only what it knows, and the aligning happens above, in one place.

Branch on the model name and that place becomes a list. It grows a line with every new product, and a product missing from the list quietly gets used with the wrong value.

This month's finding

A discipline came out of the notebook piece. A correction is not a deletion. Overwrite the original when correcting an inherited record and why it changed disappears. The previous value has to stay beside the corrected one for the next person to judge.

And the sensor piece caught a blank-screen defect. The server was registering the screen resource after the bus scan, so a client attaching during those round trips got Resource not found. Fast hardware passed, slow hardware failed. Reduced to one principle — nothing a client can ask for may depend on a hardware response.

Still open

  • The second and third layers of experience — facts becoming skill, skill becoming prediction. A sample run for days does not show it
  • Node count — only five were looked at. What a scan costs at five hundred was not measured

Next month

The first half-year closes on the proposition that the person who knows what to build stands in front.
