Experience Doesn't Just Persist — It Compounds

In the storage drawer of an old farmhouse there is usually a bundle of notebooks. Covers worn, corners rounded — thirty years of farming records. Inside is everything one person spent a lifetime earning — the year frost came early, the seedling that didn't make it through that season, when to transplant for the flowers to open on time. A son inherits those notebooks. And almost without fail, the son begins again from the very spot where his father stopped. It was preserved, but it didn't carry on. This piece is about the difference between those two — between preservation and compounding. And about where, exactly, the two diverge.

The ceiling of notes

A paper notebook preserves experience. A well-kept one will, thirty years on, tell you that day's temperature and that day's judgment. So for a long time we held "keeping good records" to be the best way to leave experience behind. It's an accurate instinct. A great deal of experience disappears with the person. But preservation has a ceiling. And that ceiling is lower than you'd think.

Whoever inherits through notes knows only as much as the writer knew. The notebook holds the writer's conclusions, but not what lies beyond them. If the father wrote "don't transplant early in this stretch," the son inherits that conclusion. But why it's so, under what conditions the rule breaks, what larger pattern lies beyond it — that the father didn't know either, and it isn't in the notebook. A notebook's wisdom stops at the writer's own insight. If the insight ran deep the ceiling is high, if shallow it's low — but the fact that there is a ceiling doesn't change.

Why is that? Because the notebook's experience is preserved while scattered. Each line is faithful, but combining across those lines is left to the reader's memory and patience. It's hard for a human mind to find patterns across thirty years of lines. Faded handwriting, formats all over the place, a heap where it's not even clear which line can be compared to which. "April 12, 2003 — a bit cold, transplanted late" and "spring 2017 — transplanted early, got cold damage" are plainly telling the same story, yet the two lines are scattered across fourteen years of paper and never meet. So scattered experience, no matter how much of it piles up, stays trapped beneath the ceiling, never combined.

Think about it and the ceiling is double-layered. The outer ceiling is as much as the writer saw, and the inner ceiling is lower still — as much as the reader managed to cross thirty years of paper in his head. There is what the father dimly knew but never wrote down, and there is what he did write but the son never met again in the heap. Both are losses. The better-kept the notebook, the smaller the first loss — but the second loss, the patterns that vanish for never being combined, only grows as the notebook thickens. The more paper, the harder it is to cross. So the prescription "write more diligently" lowers the ceiling past a certain point. That's the moment volume outruns the chance of combination.

Preservation increases volume, but more volume doesn't raise the ceiling. Write thirty years or sixty — as long as it stays scattered, the next person only memorizes the conclusions.

The difference same shape makes

The conversion we saw in past volumes — putting scattered observation into fixed columns on a screen — yields a different result here. Once the columns are fixed, the data takes the same shape. This year's records and last year's, this person's and that person's, stack up in the same shape, with the same columns. "Date / crop / transplant day / first flower / temperature that day / outcome" — when the column names match, two lines fourteen years apart finally stand in the same place.

Same shape means you can lay them over each other. And the moment you do, you see what one person could never see in a lifetime. One tomato farm went exactly this way. For thirty years the notebooks held only scattered notes like "first flower's a little late this year." Then, only after putting five years into the same-shaped columns and laying the lines over each other, it surfaced — the first flower opened, on average, on day eighteen after transplant. The spread was within two days. A number unseen across thirty years of writing, seen in the same shape after just five. This wasn't insight; it was what the data surfaced on its own. The person didn't get smarter. The experience was simply laid down in a shape that could be combined.

You have to see why "eighteen days" mattered to that farmer. It wasn't just a number — it was an anchor. Once the eighteen-day anchor existed, for the first time he could pick out the years that deviated. One year it took twenty-two days, and tracing back through the columns, that year had an unusually cold five-day spell in early April. Another year it ran fast at fifteen, and that year the week before transplant was warm. With a single anchor, the exceptions began to speak. In scattered notes both the twenty-two and the fifteen would have drifted past as "a little different this year." With no baseline to compare against, he wouldn't even have known they were exceptions. Same shape doesn't just give you an average — it sets that average up as a baseline, so every year is read against it. That's the whole of what happens at the first tier, and even that alone is something the notebooks couldn't do in thirty years.

Let's make one thing clear here. "Same shape" is no grand technology. Putting things in the same columns, in the same units, in the same format. That's all. The hard part is keeping to it every time, and by human hand that doesn't go well. On a busy spring day it's hard to open the notebook and line up the columns. So a screen that takes this conversion on in the person's place — the way this magazine deals with — has a point. Taking a single snapshot, a single scribbled line, and dropping it into fixed columns. Not forcing the same shape, but letting it fall into the same shape.

From facts to skill, from skill to prediction

This compounding has a grain. Let's take it one tier at a time.

First facts accumulate. Dates, temperatures, tasks, outcomes. Records that mean the same to anyone, beyond dispute. This is the floor. Once enough same-shaped facts pile up, skill grows on top. A rule like "since flowers come eighteen days after transplant, when this pattern arrives I'll push transplanting back three days" is hard to draw from scattered facts, but can be distilled from facts laid over each other in the same shape. Facts become the soil of skill. And once enough skill piles up, prediction stands. "This spring's temperature curve means the harvest will bunch up in two weeks and we'll be short of hands — let's line up people in advance." Rules gather into the power to see ahead.

The three tiers are qualitatively different things. Facts are what happened, skill is how to handle what will happen, prediction is seeing in advance what hasn't happened yet. Scattered notes stop at the first tier, facts — and at uncombinable facts at that. Same shape lets you lay the second on the first, the third on the second. The ceiling doesn't vanish; the ceiling becomes the floor of the next tier.

And the heart of it is this — these three tiers can each grow in different hands. One person accumulates facts, another lays skill on top, yet another builds prediction. The one who accumulated facts need not go all the way to prediction. As long as the shape is the same, the next person takes over and raises the next tier. This was impossible with notes. Notes hand down conclusions but not the facts beneath them. Whoever received a conclusion had no material to re-examine it, so they could only memorize it or doubt it, one or the other. The one who receives the same-shaped facts whole is different. He re-verifies the predecessor's rule with the data, corrects what's wrong, and raises his own tier on top.

Compounding across generations

This taking-over, at its farthest, crosses generations. Let's go back to that tomato farm.

First generation. The father wrote for thirty years. In notes. A few conclusions lived in his head, but the facts beneath them were trapped in scattered paper. What he left when he passed was conclusions and an uncombinable heap.

Now let's run the same family again, in the same shape. Say the father stacked thirty years of facts into the same columns. What he left when he passed was not conclusions but thirty verifiable years. The second generation son inherits those thirty years and distills from them a rule like "eighteen days after transplant" — skill. What the father only vaguely felt, the son hardens into a number. The son adds ten years of his own farming on top, in the same shape. Now forty years are stacked in the same shape. The third generation grandson builds prediction on those forty years. From the temperature of spring's first two weeks alone, he calls in advance the days the harvest will bunch and the days hands will run short. The grandson didn't gather facts from scratch. He started where his grandfather stopped.

Set the three generations side by side and the difference is sharp. The family that handed down through notes had thirty years for the first generation, thirty for the second, thirty for the third — each one's thirty years, three times over. Ninety years passed, but the depth reached is one person's thirty. The family that handed down in the same shape is different. On the first generation's thirty years the second adds ten and reaches skill; on that forty the third adds ten and reaches prediction. Fifty years passed, but the depth reached is somewhere one person couldn't go in two hundred and fifty years of living. It took less time and went further. This is compounding — because the next generation starts on top of the last one's result, the same effort covers an ever-greater distance.

This is qualitatively different from simple preservation. Preservation keeps; compounding grows. Take the same thirty years: hand it down as scattered notes and each generation starts over from thirty, but hand it down in the same shape and the next generation's ten years lay on top at compound interest. Ten years on top of thirty isn't just forty — it's ten years on a foothold thirty years cleared. The same ten years go much further. Experience becomes an asset that grows across generations.

Scattered notes start over from zero each generation. Same-shaped records start at the height where the last generation stopped. That gap is compounding.

Not a story about farming alone

Only the column names differ; the relation of the three is identical. Scattered, it stops at the first column; same shape, it grows to the third. When dozens of machines in one plant stack same-shaped facts in one place, a pattern emerges that one mechanic, watching a single machine for a lifetime, could never get — we'll see that on the floor in the next piece.

Honestly

Compounding isn't free. And if this piece blurs that point, everything above becomes an advertisement. There are a few conditions.

First, there must be the intent to leave things in the same shape. It's not enough to just write; you have to stack into the same columns in the same format to lay them over each other. If the format drifts — if some years are in Celsius and others in Fahrenheit — you can't overlay them, and compounding stops right there. The screen keeps this intent for you, but what to put in the same shape in the first place is set by a person.

Second, stack hazy facts and you get hazy predictions. Even with the same shape, what you put in is still the work of someone who knows the domain. Skill stacked on wrong facts goes to wrong predictions. At exactly the same speed. Same shape doesn't guarantee correctness — only that things can be combined.

Third, the data works no magic. "First flower on day eighteen" was surfaced by the data, but what it means — whether to push transplanting back or not — is read by a person. Wisdom doesn't well up automatically; a foothold is laid from which a person's insight can go further. The foothold doesn't replace the person. It only stands them higher.

Fourth, a pattern seen in small data is a small pattern. Believing five years' eighteen days to be a thirty-year law is dangerous. Same shape shows a pattern fast, but how solid that pattern is is another judgment. Seeing fast and knowing for sure are not the same.

Granting all these conditions, the heart remains. With scattered notes you can't cross the ceiling no matter how honest you are, and in the same shape — as long as the conditions hold — the ceiling becomes the floor of the next tier. That's the line dividing preservation from compounding.
